Literacy Groups

Friday, October 5, 2018
The first six weeks of school we spend the majority of our time building community and learning routines and procedures.  It is also my time to learn the students and understand what they know already.  It takes a while for 20 brand new kindergartners to learn how to be independent in this new environment.  This week we started literacy groups.  This is a huge accomplishment.  This means that our kids are able to be independent for 15+ minutes and not interrupt while I'm working with a group of students.  Guided groups are where we hit the ground running.  I am able to instruct the students on skills that are just right for them.  This is the time when we really start to see progress being made.

We also had some writing groups as well.  Groups worked on skills such as refining our drawings of people, while other groups worked on writing more than one sentence.

Here are our learning objectives for the week:
Fundations:  correct letter formation g, a, letter name, letter sound
Reading/phonic: Identifying rhyming words, one to one matching, segmenting compound words
Writing:  Planning for a sentence you will write, counting the words in a sentence, using an ABC chart to spell words.
Math:  shapes and their attributes, recognizing numbers without counting, using a tens frame
Social Skills:  We can use our kind words.  This one we've been working on for a couple weeks.  We are continuing into next week as well.  We try not to use "snappy" words when talking to our classmates.

Here is our week in pictures:
Happy birthday friend!  Thanks for sharing treats!

Learning about the attributes of a circle.  We had to find them in magazines.

 Picture day!

When I'm working with groups the rest of the class is working with their partner on literacy tasks.

Library day!

Each morning, we get in a circle and greet each other.  This week we learned how to do a proper handshake.

Our Stop and Think lesson this week focused on listening skills.  We learned that to be a good listener, you must keep your eyes on the speaker, your mouth quiet and your hands down.

During reading groups our groups got to write on the table with whiteboard markers.  Don't worry we talked about how this is the only place it's okay to write on the table!  And it's only okay with Mrs. Wright's permission.  :)

We had a guest reader.  Mr. Woods came and read some books that he picked out.  Thanks Mr. Woods!

Each month I choose a student for the honor of eating lunch with Dr. Majerus.  Here are the kindergarten lunch with the principal kids for the month of October enjoying a game.

Our poem this week was orange.  We practiced pointing to the words as we read and stopping occasionally to make sure we were in the right place.

We read the book, "Mouse Shapes".  In this book the mice use shapes to create other things like houses, cheese and even mice.  After talking about the attributes of rectangles and triangles we used those shapes to create a pencil.
