Highlight Reel #3

What a week!  We talked a lot about our birthdays.  We made a paper cake for each month of the year. Each of us decorated a candle and put it on our birthday month cake.  We also took pictures of each month’s birthday kids.

We made a human graph to show how old we are.  We held our hands out to make pairs to see if more of us were five years old or six years old.  Lots more of us are five!
We drew a self-portrait and used this to make a permanent graph to show our ages that will stay up all year.  When one of has a birthday we will move our self-portrait to age 6 or 7!
We learned that our drawings tell stories.  We learned that setting is where our stories happen.  We used setting as a way to develop stories.  The woods and underwater were the two we focused on first.  We learned how to add details to our pictures to tell more about our stories.  Check out some of our awesome work!

(Sorry everyone!  I am not tech savvy enough to know how to turn my pictures!)
We read two books together this week.  We read Vegetables and Baby Animals.  In these books, we found the site word a.  We learned that the letter a can be squished inside a word or it can have space around it.  When it has spaces around it, it’s a word rather than just a letter! Lots of us took a turn to point to the words as we read.  Then we added these to our book boxes to use for read to self and read to someone.  We added work on writing to our literacy block.

General Announcements:
  • Next week will begin our fourth week of school!  We are working on our morning routines.  The kids have three jobs when they come in.  They will put away their backpacks, check their take home folder and put it in their seat sack, and move their name stick from absent to here.  As we move forward, we are working on building independence and confidence.  It would be a great time to hug your child outside our classroom door and let them take ownership of these three morning jobs by coming into the classroom on their own.  While I do love to see you too, I want to make sure I get to connect with each of the kids as they come in.
  •   I've see lots of reading logs coming right along.  Keep on reading with your kids!  It's neat to see all the titles you've read.
  • We're still collecting family pictures.  If you haven't sent one in, we would love to see one and hear your child share a little about who is in your family.  These will hang in our cubbies!  We have many that are already up!

The Highlight Reel #2

This week has been a busy one!  Monday was library check out.  We learned about ways to take care of books.  We also used shelf markers to keep our place while we are checking out a book.  Next week, we will check out on Tuesday because we don't have school on Monday.  Please send books back on Tuesday.

We read a funny book about crocodiles in the water called “Counting Crocodiles”.  A monkey counts crocodiles and uses them to get across the sea to the banana tree.  We helped the monkey count to 10!  We used pattern blocks to make patterns.  Check out some of our work!

We played a game called count and sit.  We counted around the circle from one to ten.  We pass our math mascot, (who we named sparkle today) around the circle.  When it came to you, you said one number.  If you were the person that said ten, you sat down.  We played down until there was only one person left.  Check out the last one standing!

We are learning about how to draw people.  We are thinking about the shapes that make up faces and bodies.  Our people turned out great!  Next week we will work on adding details to our bodies and grounding our people so they do not fly.  We will talk about using drawings to tell a story.

Our reading skill for the week is pointing to each word as we say it.  We read a book together on the projector called, “Little”.  Several of us took a turn at the board to point to each word.  Everyone got little copy of the book to keep in  book boxes.  Then we used those books and ABC charts to read quietly to ourselves and practice pointing to the words and letters.

We also learned how to read books with a friend.  We took turns pointing to the words on each page or the letters on our ABC chart.

Lenny is a hit!  We got him out and let him walk around our carpet.  Friends helped him back to his spot.  Each of us got a chance to hold him if we wanted to.  Then we talked about our five senses.  We made observations using those senses.  We did talk about how we can’t smell him (most of the time!) and we definitely wouldn’t taste him!  Here are some of our observations.

Some of our friends have mentioned wanting to bring him crickets so, I decided to make a sign up genius for crickets.  If you would like to be the cricket keeper for the week, please sign up using the link below.  Please don't feel like you have to, I can definitely get the crickets too but I know it can be fun to bring food for our pet.

We also had a visit from our Counselor and learned about what the counselors job is in our school.  She used a potato head to talk through her jobs!

It was a wonderful week!

General Announcements:

·       Take home folders are up and running!  Please keep these in your child’s backpack and check it daily.  This is a great place to send me notes too as we check it daily!

·       If you have a dismissal change please, send a note in the take home folder.  It would also be helpful if you notified the office as well.  They will get a message to me and it will ensure that your child is going home the correct way.  I do have email but sometimes I am not able to check it right away.  We are a busy group and I don't often get a minute to check!

·       Thanks to all those that came to Get the Scoop Night!  I so enjoyed hearing about all your wonderful little people and connecting with each of you!
