The Highlight Reel

This week during shared reading we made lots of predictions and connections.  We read, "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.  We also read, "The Hat".  We made connections between these two books and used what we remembered from "The Mitten" to help us predict what happened in, "The Hat".  If you haven't had a chance to check out these books, they are amazing!

During our literacy rotation time, one of our rotations was write around the room.  For this, the kids used clip boards to search for words from the story, "The Mitten"    At another rotation the kids practiced rainbow writing c, o and a.  During this time, they also do Osmos, listen to reading with Myon Reader and Pebble Go, work on literacy puzzles, write independently, read books from our library and play word games.  It is pretty wonderful to see how independent our kiddos can be during this time.  The kids really enjoy literacy rotations!

We have worked really hard in writing.  We are learning about including who, what and where the story happened both in our pictures and our words.  We have some proud writers in our class!  (Sorry about the terrible picture quality!)

In math we have been working hard on counting.  We have been counting objects and also writing numbers.  Many groups worked on writing numbers as high as each kid could go.  We used 100s charts to make sure that all of our numbers were written correctly and not backwards.

We had another birthday this week too!  Thanks for sharing treats!  Happy birthday friend!

Announcements:
  • This week in the Friday Folder, there was a note and a bag to use to share your family traditions.  After asking all of you about your celebrations, I thought it would be great to allow the kids to share the traditions and be proud of your family celebrations.  Thank you for working on this, this weekend.  We will share them little by little over the next week.
  • It is very cold!  We go outside most days unless our office decides it is too cold for us to go out.  Please send your child with a warm coat and hat and gloves or mittens.  It would be great if you could practice zipping too!
Have a great weekend!

A Day of Surprises!

Today was a day full of surprises!  Our Timber wolf mascot's name is Flash.  Flash received the most votes.  But that wasn't the only surprise!  We got to meet him!

After that we had a surprise visit from our school nurse! (Mrs. Wright knew but the kids didn't!)  She taught us about germs.  Ask your child to tell you about your activity!

Our room mom's were at it again!  Check out our mid-day surprise!  We love it!  Thank you!

Busy week in kindergarten!  We added some new literacy tasks to our reading time.  We added alphabet puzzles, word work games and write the room.  Our word work games will focus on making words, and practicing our word wall words.  For write the room, the kids use a clip board and go around the room and write words that they find.  Sometimes it will be from our chart and sometimes there will be some special words hiding depending on what we are learning.  Everyone thought that task was great fun.
We also practiced our fine motor skills by cutting snowflakes and creating a paper collage mural.  For our mural we talked about things we observe outside in the winter.  Then I put out some paper and let them create!  The kids could only use paper, scissors and glue with a little pencil to help them make their shapes to be cut.  I was blown away by the results.  Our kids worked so hard to create their masterpieces.  There was tons of perseverance happening all around.

Our math focus was counting this week.  We worked on making sure that we say one number for each object.   Our small group focus was counting bags of objects and at large group we learned a new game called Tic Tac Teen.  This game practiced number recognition, counting one to one as well as counting numbers on a tens frame for numbers in the teens.

We did a lot of practice in reading and writing this week.  We are working on drawing and writing for readers.  We all have messages to share and we want our readers to enjoy reading our true stories.

Congrats to our Citizen of the month.  My girl was Citizen too!
