We were batty!

Last week one of our friends mentioned she was interested in bats, so we took this week to learn about them!  We read lots of bat books and made paper bats to hang from our ceiling. Our poetry center got transformed into a science center complete with bat books and a wall full of 10s frames.  We learned that bats can eat up to 600 mosquitoes in an hour.  We are working together to cut our 600 mosquitoes so we can see exactly how many that is!  We have really enjoyed learning about these amazing creatures.  Ask your child to tell you some things we learned about bats.

Learning objectives for the week:
Reading:  Retelling, letters vs words, sight words, I, a, the, look
Writing:  Writing the sounds we hear in our words.
Math:  shapes, combinations of 10, number formation
Fundations:  Correct Letter formation P, J name and sound.  Letter formation has been tough for us.  I am sending home some practice sheets for you to work on at home.  Please use the prompts so we can make our letters the kindergarten way.
Social Skills:  I can participate in class.

Here is our last two weeks in pictures... there are a ton!

Congrats to our October Citizen of the month!  We are proud of you!

We took a nature walk to look for signs of fall.
We made a list of everything we see in the fall, then we used paper collage to make a bulletin board showing fall.

It turned out beautifully!
Here are some close ups of some of the details.

We had an earth quake drill.  We learned how to go under the tables to protect our heads and bodies.

Some of our Daily 5 centers changed.  We are now working on pencil/paper handwriting to help us form the letters the kindergarten way.  We even get to use gel pens!
Here is our new Science center.  These two are cutting mosquitoes and putting them in our tens frames.

This week our class got to be the example class for some teacher PD.  Kindergarten teachers from two other schools from around the district came to watch a lesson with our class.  I even got to be a spectator.  It was fun to watch them behind the glass.
BEU has a traveling lego tub.  Each week a new class gets to have the tub.  Our class was chosen this week.  Next week our lego creations will be featured in the case in the main hallway.

Our beautiful creations are displayed in the case.

We used highlighters to find the word the in our book for the week.

We used yarn to make shapes!  We had to make sure the shapes had the right number of sides.

Every morning, we get in a circle and do a morning greeting.  We often shake hands.  We learn about greeting each person by using our right hand to shake and making eye contact.

We got to read with our 4th grade buddies this week!

Our fall party was a success!!!  Thank you to all those that helped with this fun event.

We made it!  It was a fun week.  Have a great weekend!
