We have lots of exciting things coming up in February.  Our PTA is putting on a circus on February 9.  Thank you to everyone who has sent in your donations for our classroom basket.  I have received a few things.  Keep them coming!
Wednesday is the 100th day of school.  We will dress up as 100 year old people.  Also don't forget to have your child create a collection of 100 things.  We've got some going on our bulletin board already.  Your child gets to share them with the class before we hang them up.

Next Wednesday, February 6 is Global School Play day and I cannot tell you how excited I am.  This is the perfect opportunity for kindergartners.  Your child may bring a toy or game from home to use during the day.  We will have some basic rules like: no technology, no weapons or violent toys, be kind, take turns.  Other than that we will play all day!  It should be awesome!

This week is very cold!!!  Though we don't go outside if it gets too cold, there are times when the weather is just on the edge and we take a chance and bundle up and go.  Please make sure your child has hats, gloves and a big heavy coats so that they are prepared if we do go.

Here are our learning objectives for last week:
Fundations:  reading words by segmenting and blending the sounds, quick recall of letter names & sounds for fluency
Reading:  Checking the picture for a clue, then cross checking with the first letter
Writing:  We took our first writing assessment!  Then we had some time to free write with friends.
Math:  Understanding adding and subtraction,  showing thinking on paper
Social Skills:  Following directions the first time they are given

A few pictures from this week.  There aren't a ton!

Congrats to our kindergarten Spelling Bee winners!

And Congrats to our Citizen of the month.  We had two!

Winter Weather

Snowy days are upon us!  What a wild week with all this weather.  We will see what this weekend brings and hope to see all of your children on Tuesday!  Because of our crazy schedule this week, we were nowhere near our normal routines.  With two half days, we did math one afternoon and our reading routines the next.  Reading bags are in backpacks but please be aware that the books in there aren't as practiced as last week.  Thank you to all families for reading with your children!  Everyone brought them back this week!!!  I absolutely love sharing reading bags with you so you can see how awesome your kids are.  :)

Thank you to all families that have sent in extra supplies!  That was super helpful and many of our kids are good to go now.

In February the PTA is putting on our BEU circus.  There is more information for you about the circus in your child's Friday Folder.  Each classroom puts together a basket for the raffle.  Students and families can buy raffle tickets to try to win these awesome baskets.  This is a fantastic fundraiser for our PTA.  Our PTA funded new equipment on the playground with money like this that was raised in the past two years.  Click on the link below to see what we still need.  Thank you for your participation!

Six flags reading logs are due on February 22.  I put an extra log in the Friday Folder in case you have misplaced your original one.

Here are our some of learning objectives for the past two weeks:
Reading:  Using the picture as a clue to solve unknown words, finding words in text based on the first letter
Writing:  Using words we know in our sentences, using different kinds of punctuation, writing sentences and adding color to our pictures
Math:  Finding numbers on a 100s chart, counting by 2,5 and 10, comparing numbers & quantities to 20, teen numbers
Fundations: segmenting and blending words(tapping), correct letter formation for uppercase letters, quick recall of letters and sounds (fluency)

Here is our week in pictures!
This little cutie found a cozy spot to read on Library day!

We played a game called "Roll and Record" to practice writing sight words.

Learning about teen numbers

We had a visit from flash and the PTA to tell us about the circus.

We ended our week with a super fun time at Maker Space in the Library!

Before Break

I hope you had a fantastic break spending time with your family and friends.  I know I did!  I am ever so grateful for all of the wonderful gifts that you gave me before break!  You really know how to spoil me!  Thank you so much for your generosity!

We are getting back in the swing of school.  This week we focused heavily on what the school rules are and why we have rules.  I was absolutely amazed at how well our kiddos jumped back into the school routine.  The can talk about those rules and they chose to follow them too.  I can easily say they have grown up a bit over the break.  The transition back in was smooth.  Next week, we will be back in full swing with our regular routines.  Since this was a short week, here are some pictures from the week before break!
Sharing our family traditions

Working on our beautiful calendars.  I hope you loved them!  They were a labor of love.  Everyone was so excited to give them to you.

Things to Remember:
  • Don't forget to send snack each day.
  • Please empty the Friday folder and send it back on Monday.  Thanks!
  • We will have a written Spelling Bee next week.  A note was sent home in the Friday Folder before break.   This will take place in our classroom on Wednesday.  We will be using the kindergarten list.  If there is a tie, we will use the other list as a tie breaker.  If you would like to practice, there is another copy of the words in this week's Friday folder.  The top two winners will be announced at the citizen of the month assembly.
  • Next Friday is Matching Colors day to celebrate being kind.  We will be matching with our buddy class in 4th grade.  We will wear blue.
