Quick update for a quick week

This week we will have parent teacher conferences.  I am looking forward to sharing with you about your child's progress! There was no Friday folder checklist this week as report cards went home.  Please check your child's backpack for this.  It appears that many of them may have been missing a page with information from specials.  I will have them reprinted Monday and have them for you at conferences.

Weekly Objectives:
Fundations:  hearing long vowels, segmenting and blending words, fluency with letters and sounds
Reading:  Identifying non-fiction text features and their purposes:  table of contents, diagrams, captions, headings.
Writing:  Staying on topic, including facts not stories
Math:  Addition and Subtraction, writing numbers as high as we can go

Our week in Pictures:
There aren't very many because this week was so short!
We had a presentation about storm water and the importance of not polluting.

We previewed the book fair.  This will be going on next week.  Come check it out when you come to conferences!

Things to Remember:

It was a busy week!  We are working on assessments and getting ready for conferences.  Please check your child's Friday Folder for your time.  If this time does not work, let me know as soon as possible so we can make a change.
Our new writing unit is non-fiction.  The kids are so excited to share facts about things they are experts on.  We are reading non-fiction books and writing our own too.  The goal by the end of this unit is to be able to write an opening sentence introducing the topic, three different facts and a closing sentence.  This is a big jump from where we are now.  We will keep working hard to use letters and sounds to write sentences.  We will refine our skills with word spaces and punctuation as well.

Weekly Objectives:
Reading:  non-fiction text features, retelling facts, rhyming, hearing onset and rhyme, beginning sounds
Writing: Telling five facts about a topic, staying focused on one topic.
Math:  equals symbol, addition symbol, comparing quantities
Fundations: segmenting and blending sounds, hearing sounds and blending them together, fluency with letters and sounds

Our Week in Pictures:
Sorting beginning sounds

Telling five facts about our chosen topic

Playing a game to learn about the addition symbol and the equal symbol.

Each morning we greet each other.  This helps each of us feel welcomed and starts us off for a great day.

Passing out Valentines.

Party time!

This little cutie came to help too!

Lots of play in K!

We had so much fun on Global School Play Day!  Though we didn't do any academic learning, we learned lots of things through play.  We practiced our cooperation skills, problem solving, what to do when we are bored, creativity skills and many more.  I was so impressed with how well they handled the no tech day.  We had media and they played in there too!  By the end of the day, we had been so active that all of us (including me) were tired.  I bet the slept well on Wednesday night!

Thank you to all who donated to our classroom basket!  It turned out really cute!  Tomorrow is the BEU circus.  We hope to see all of you there!  This is a great event and a wonderful fundraiser for our school.

Here are our learning objectives for the week:
Reading: Non-Fiction text features, retelling facts, fluency with uppercase and lowercase alphabet
Writing: Writing non-fiction books to teach about what we are experts on
Math: Understanding the equals symbol, number recognition fluency particularly the teens
Fundations: segmenting and blending three letter words
Social Skills:  Being respectful to others and property

Our Week in Pictures

We had Mrs. Wright's hair salon.  Don't worry moms we didn't share brushes and I used water!  :)

These kiddos were going into the wilderness.

We had open art and they loved it!

By the end of the day we all needed a rest!

We played a game to help us recognize teen numbers and compare quantities.

Career day was a success!  I didn't even get a picture of everyone that was dressed up!

Let's all cross our fingers for good weather!  I want to see our kiddos every day next week!!!
