A Trip Around the World

Friday, December 14, 2018 No comments
This week we have been taking a virtual trip around the world to learn about holidays and traditions of other countries.  We began by making a suitcase for our trip to hold all of our good learning.  We buckled our seatbelts and "flew" off to each country using google earth.  We learned about Christmas in Germany, Las Posadas in Mexico and Kwanzaa in the United states.  We will continue this good work next week too!

Next Friday we will be having a kindergarten cozy day.  Your child can wear Pajamas to school and bring a pillow and a blanket.  We will do some cozy day activities and have hot chocolate too!

Here are our learning goals for the week:
Reading:  Tapping out sounds we hear in words, using the picture to make predictions
Writing: using a resource to spell unknown words, reading our work to a friend, adding more to our writing to make it even better.
Math:  Decomposing shapes, understanding teen numbers, understanding numbers on a tens frame
Social Skills:  Understanding differences

We learned what a tradition was.  Then we sorted things into traditions and not traditions.

Library time!

Sharing our own family traditions.  We share a couple each day and will continue this into next week!

Reading our writing to a friend then fixing it up.

Congratulations to our Citizen of the month!

In full swing

We are back in full swing after all the short weeks!  We got in lots of reading groups and math groups too.  We started a new unit in fundations.  This unit focuses heavily on using sounds to segment and blend words together.  We tap our fingers to help us feel the sounds.  We will also practice the correct paths for writing uppercase letters as well.

In the next two weeks we will learn lots about customs and traditions surrounding December holidays of many different cultures.  We will also focus on the customs and traditions of our classmates too!   In the Friday Folder, there is a brown sack.  Please write a little about a special tradition your family has  and put something in the sack to represent it.  We will share these as they come in before winter break.

On the last day before break we will have a kindergarten cozy day.  Your child may dress in PJs, bring a blanket and a pillow that they can carry.  We will do some cozy day activities in here and have some hot chocolate too!

Here are our learning goals for the week:
Reading:  Finding words in text, cross checking the picture with the first sound, making connections,
Writing:  Writing stories for readers, making writing neat, using word spaces
Math:  identifying shapes by feel, sorting blocks by attributes, graphing favorite colors, exploring calculators
Fundations:  tapping words to read them.
