Snowy days

It was great to see everyone's' smiling faces after our break.  The kids were excited to share snow stories with me.  We had a very busy week getting back into the school routine.  In the coming weeks we will be learning about holidays around the world.  Thank you to all that took the time to answer the holiday survey.  I want to make sure all holidays celebrated are represented.  These next few weeks before the break are busy and fun.  I will have lots of pictures to share. Here is the link if you missed it the first time.

We use dry erase markers very often.  I have noticed that lots of kids are getting it on their clothes.  We are now practicing setting it on the ground instead of our laps.  It can be very stubborn to get out of clothes.  I found this on pinterest of one mom's idea of how she was able to remove it.  I thought I would share it with you in case you have stubborn dry erase stains too.  I plan to keep some hairspray here at school so I can zap it super fast if someone does get it on their clothes.  If you would prefer that I not use it on your child's clothes please let me know.  I figured the faster we can get to it, the easier it would be to remove.

We started talking about service learning this week.  We read several books where the characters are kids that help others.  We made a fantastic list of ways that we would like to help.  Stay tuned to find out what our service learning project will be!

Learning Objectives:
Reading:  Checking the picture for a clue, cross checking with the first letter in the word, recognizing sight words, making connections to the text
Writing:   writing the letters correctly on the lines, telling a story across three pages
Math:  correct number formation, positional words, skip counting by 2s
Social Skills:  Service learning.  How can kids help?

Here is our week in pictures:
4th grade came to share about Jingle Away JA day.  Lots of bells have been purchased!

These two friends were working on sentence puzzles about weather.

This friend was building and writing sentences.

Here are some beautiful mental images from our snowman poem this week.

We read, "Snowmen at Night" and made cute little snowmen of our own.

We used paint and Q-tips to count snowflakes as we added them.  Some of us chose to add over 100!

Here is our special me for this week.  He did a great job answering our questions.

Wright's restaurant was a huge success!  Our little lovelies attended the fanciest restaurant in town.  They were greeted at the door by a hostess.  Their coats were taken and they were shown to a table.  The mood was set by flame less candles and cloth tablecloths.  Each table had a server, that brought them a menu and took their order.  They enjoyed quiet conversation over classical music.
I was absolutely impressed with how well each of our kiddos remembered their manners.  Napkins went on laps and there were pleases and thank yous a plenty.  They waited to eat before everyone was served and stayed patiently at the table while everyone finished.  It was a special feast with special friends.
Your child should have brought home a place mat from our restaurant.  On this place mat, there is a list of  kind things that our class said about your child  All of these ideas came from our students.  We took time to appreciate everyone and I wrote them exactly as stated.  They were so sweet and personal and I hope you treasure them as much as I enjoyed hearing them.

Thank you to all families that attended conferences.  We had 100% attendance.  I really enjoyed sharing progress with you and celebrating in your child's successes.  I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and I will see everyone's smiling faces tomorrow!

Welcome to Wright's Restaurant... (Photo quality isn't that great due to our fantastic mood lighting.)

November is upon us.  The kids and I put our calendar together for this month.  As we put on the "no school days" one of our kids mentioned that we have 15 no school days this month.  Between weekends, Thanksgiving and work days for conferences this month will fly.  We have lots of important things happening this month.  Please check your child's Friday Folder for your conference time.  This month we will be learning about using manners.  We will practice this learning at a special friends feast on November 20.  We will dress in fancy clothes and attend the fancy restaurant called, "Wright's Restaurant".  It is a really fun time for the kids to use their manners and enjoy each others company.  I am looking for some help to be able to pull this off.  We will need food for our restaurant and five servers.  I do limit this to only adults as I want the kids to focus on each other and practice their restaurant manners.  They will be all ready for your family feasts if you have them!   Click on this link for more information and to sign up.

Practicing number writing and counting with play-dough and pumpkin mats.

Here is one students work showing ways to make 8.

Enjoying the cold day on the playground!

We learned that good readers make mental images while they read to help them understand what is happening in the story.  Here are a few of our mental images of this weeks poem.

 On Fridays we buddy read.
