First Week Success!

Friday, August 23, 2019

Our first week was a success!  I'm so impressed with these little cuties and their ability to handle a full five days of kindergarten right in their first week.  And it sure was a busy one!  This week we spent lots of time learning our class routines and getting to know each other.  Tonight in your child's backpack you will find the Friday Folder.  Please take a few minutes to look through everything.   There is a ton this week and many of them are super important.  Please return the Friday Folder in the backpack on Monday with any papers/pictures that need to be returned.  We will use this each week to transport things back and forth between home and school.  There are several things that need to be returned asap.  Keep an eye our for:
  • Help with Pictures
  • Kindergarten Picnic
  • Verification forms.
  • Get the Scoop Reminder (nothing to return just make sure to note your time)

Today we had a visit from Mrs. Fitch.  She introduced us to the library.  She read us a story called, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus".  Then we watched a video called, "Don't let the Pigeon Read a book".  Click on the name of the video to watch if you and your child would like to watch again and talk about rules of the library.  Library check out will begin on Monday.

    Learning Objectives:
Reading:  Learning about our class library and how to put books away.
Writing:  This week we got out writing journals and we decorated the outside to make them our own.
Math:  Exploring math manipulatives - pattern blocks, geoblocks, and snap cubes
Social Skills:  Classroom rules, getting to know you, being kind

Here are some pictures from our week!

Each morning we will begin our day with morning tubs.  These are filled with STEM activities.  They are great for problem solving and working together.

Each morning we dance a little using Go Noodle.  Click the link to check it out!

We learned how to use crayons.  Here we are trying them out for the first time.

Lined up and ready to go to lunch!  We have our bubbles in and our tails behind.

     Learning about our playground rules.

    Enjoying the playground!

This was our first writing time and our first writing sample.  Each student did their best to write everything they can!

    Learning to use scissors.

At the end of the day we do choice time.  This is play time is an important part of our day.  It is great for working together, solving conflicts, and dealing with disappointment when we don't get the choice we wanted.  Some of our choices include:  games, big blocks, animals and blocks, cars, kitchen, doll house, legos and morning tubs and white boards.

    Learning about the lunch room

We read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom".  Then we made a class book called, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Look who is in our room!" (If the kids are working on something where their name shows, I always take a top of the head picture.  I don't like to put names with faces.)

    Working on self portraits

On A days we play on the front play ground with Mrs. Croom's class!

Each day we will do what we call Fundations.  This is our time to learn about letters and sounds.  As the year goes on we will learn about how these go together to make words.

Learning about our classroom library.  We learned how to put books back where they go.

    Getting our writing journals.

Mrs. Fitch came to teach us about the big school library.

We had our first fire drill today!

    Torn paper name activity.

This also helped us learn how to use glue bottles.

We had an awesome first week!

You can see why these smiling faces will be tired this weekend!  I'm so proud of all of them for trying their best and learning all that we crammed in.  Have a great weekend and get some rest!
